St. Marks Taekwon-Do school travelled to Cork last weekend to compete in the ITF Ireland Cup. The students who had been training hard since January for the event did not disappoint coming away with host of trophies across all age groups and sections.  Among the successes on the day were Peter Downey who had a great result by claiming gold in one of the larger sections, Yellow Belt Patterns.

Jed Rena took gold in Patterns in the junior Green belt section.  Cara Ronan won bronze in Blue belt Patterns while Musashi Sweeney went on to win the event before doubling his tally with gold in sparring also. Older brother Michael Sweeney came 2nd in his Red belt Patterns section and went one better by claiming gold in Red belt sparring.

In the Junior Black Belt section Aidan Kelly was amongst stiff competition in his sparring group but managed to claim an impressive second place.

The seniors section saw Mark Sweeney double his winnings with two silvers in Patterns and Sparring. Red belt, Magdalena Michaleliska had fantastic success in her sections placing 1st in Patterns and Destruction and 3rd in Sparring. This was the best overall senior result of the day which in itself resulted in yet another trophy.

In the senior black belt section 4th degree Deborah Manning took the prize in Black Belt Patterns with John Paul Nestor coming 2nd in the Black Belt heavyweight sparring division.  In the Black Belt veteran divisions there was success for 2nd degree Martin Roe who won silver in the 1st & 2nd degree patterns section while Walter McGuinness won silver in the veteran 3rd and 4th degree black belt patterns.

Senior Instructor to St. Mark’s Taekwon-Do school, 6th degree Ms. Valerie Keane was delighted with the achievements of the weekend.

Black Belt Class
On Sunday March 11th, St. Mark’s Taekwon-Do held a black belt class.  Instructor for the morning was R.I.T.A Senior Master, 8th degree Senior Master Anthony Phelan.  After a warm up Snr. Master Phelan focused on combination fundamental movements which allowed the students to focus and use their imagination in attacking and defence sequences.  The black belts were then brought through the first and second degree patterns with an opportunity to ask questions to Snr. Master Phelan.  Later in the class the members covered items in the new syllabus then finished the class by returning to the respective patterns of their grade.  A very open and enjoyable class was had by all.  Many thanks to Senior Master Phelan for an excellent class with thanks also to Ms. Keane for hosting.
